Quality Circle Concept Introduced in India

BHEL, Ramachandrapuram Hyderabad became the pioneer in introducing Quality Circle concept in India under the leadership of Mr. S.R. Udpa - GM-Operations, with strong support from senior management including Mr. Madhav Rao and Mr. K.L. Puri, Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL.

Prof. V. Narayana of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Hyderabad provided crucial knowledge and presentation materials that helped conduct programs across various locations.

1982

Foundation of QCFI Bengaluru Chapter

Dr. R.C. Agarwal, President of JK Jute Mills Ltd., who had initiated workers participation in management in 1977, learned about Quality Circles and connected with JUSE who directed him to Mr. S.R. Udpa.

After multiple visits and training sessions with BHEL Quality Circle members, JK Jute Mills Ltd. started the QC movement. With assistance from Asian Productivity Council, they invited Mr. Ichiro Miyayuchi of JUSE for comprehensive training.

1982-1990

Expansion Across Karnataka

Dr. A. N. Saxena, Director General of National Productivity Council, recognized the potential of Quality Circles and actively associated with the movement.

The Quality Circle movement gradually expanded across Karnataka, initially in a small way but steadily growing to encompass manufacturing, IT, and service industries throughout the state.

1990-2000

Institutionalizing Quality Excellence

QCFI Bengaluru Chapter established itself as the premier platform for quality professionals across Karnataka. The chapter began organizing regular conventions, workshops, and training programs.

Strategic partnerships were formed with leading Karnataka organizations to implement quality circle concepts and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
